Ureshino, a town that is fun to walk

Ureshino is known for its hot springs, counted among Japan's three best for beautiful skin, and for its tea. Toyotamahime Shrine, Siebold-no-Yu, the foot baths and the tea shops are all within walking distance of the guesthouse.

The town we call home

Ureshino is known for its hot springs, counted among Japan's three best for beautiful skin, and for Ureshino tea.

We used to feel that life in Saga Prefecture was hard without a car. After moving to Ureshino, we found a town you can get around on foot, and one you want to walk in.

Walking through the hot-spring town, you will find many shops that locals love, such as an old-fashioned candy shop and a greengrocer.

Visit a shop two or three times and people start greeting you like a regular. Saying hello is a normal part of the day here, and we often run into people we know in town and stop to chat.

The hot-spring town is across the river from our lane. All of these places are in or around the town, and we are happy to tell you how to get there.

Shrine

Toyotamahime Shrine

Toyotamahime Shrine in the hot-spring town is dedicated to Toyotamahime, regarded as a goddess of beautiful skin.

Touching the white catfish, her messenger, is said to bring the blessing of beautiful skin.

LAPPY has no hot spring bath, but you can cross the river and walk to this public bath.

On the main shopping street, you will find Siebold's Foot Bath and Yushuku Hiroba.

Ureshino is known for its tea as well as its hot springs.

On the main shopping street, you can browse the candy shop, greengrocer and tea shops as you walk.

Learn about the history of Ureshino tea and how it is made.

You can also try brewing tea and tea dyeing with hot spring water.

The waterfall is a three-tiered drop of about 11 meters, surrounded by walking paths and a park.

Onsen yudofu (hot spring tofu)

Onsen yudofu is a local specialty of Ureshino, served at restaurants in the hot-spring town.

A day walking around Ureshino (example)

If you stay a few nights, you can spend a whole day walking to the shrine, the waterfall, tea, foot baths and hot springs.

  1. Morning

    Plan your day at LAPPY CAFE

    Guests can use LAPPY CAFE on the ground floor from 9:00 to 11:00 every morning. Cafe food and drinks are paid separately from your room. If you would like to use the cafe before check-out but earlier than 9:00, please book in advance. Ask us where to go that day.

  2. Late morning

    Visit Toyotamahime Shrine

    Meet the white catfish, the messenger of the goddess, at Toyotamahime Shrine.

  3. Lunch

    Try onsen yudofu

    Have Ureshino's hot spring tofu at a restaurant in town.

  4. Afternoon

    Todoroki Waterfall Park and Chaoshiru

    Walk the river promenade to Todoroki Waterfall Park, then learn about Ureshino tea at Chaoshiru nearby.

  5. Evening

    Foot baths and a hot spring

    Warm your feet at a foot bath on the main street, then take a bath at a public bath such as Siebold-no-Yu.

  6. Night

    Dinner in town

    We are room only, so have dinner at a restaurant in Ureshino. The restaurants and bars map below can help.
